DePaul University School of Music graduates are currently performing with the Chicago and Boston Symphony Orchestra; the Berlin Philharmonic; the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the Philadelphia, Buffalo, Charleston, Jacksonville, Memphis, Winnipeg, and Kitchner-Waterloo Symphony Orchestras; the Metropolitan, Houston, Chicago Lyric, Berlin, Zurich, Montreal, Boston, Glimmerglass, Santa Fe, and Minnesota Opera Companies; and touring in musical theater productions across the country. Jazz studies majors have gone on to work in Chicago’s commercial recording studios; recorded and toured with Maynard Ferguson, Chick Corea, Frank Mantooth, Woody Herman, Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Alanis Morissette, and Mighty Blue Kings; and released CDs for Reference, Corridor, River North, and Mesa/Bluemoon recordings.

Formed in 1923, the School of Music provides approximately 400 music majors from the United States, Canada, South and Central America, Europe, Asia, and Australia the opportunity to study with a world-class faculty. Students work with 100 full- and part-time faculty members who are members of the Chicago Symphony, the Lyric Opera, and Chicago’s major chamber music ensembles and recording and jazz artists. In addition, students receive master classes with such major artists as Renee Flemming, Susan Mentzer, Phillip Glass, Elliot Carter, George Pearle, Phil Smith, Joseph Alessi, John Faddis, Bobbi Shew, and Phil Woods.

The School of Music is located on DePaul’s beautiful Lincoln Park Campus in one of Chicago’s most desirable neighborhoods. Students are less than 15 minutes from Symphony Center, the Civic Opera House, the Art Institute, Auditorium Theater, and literally dozens of other concert, theater, and jazz venues. Practice rooms are open from 7 a.m. until midnight, seven days a week. There are separate facilities for piano and percussion majors.

DePaul has great pride in the quality of its performing ensembles. Students have the opportunity to perform and read major repertoire with DePaul Symphony Orchestra, DePaul Chamber Orchestra, DePaul Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, DePaul Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra & Jazz Workshop, DePaul Opera Theater, Concert Choir, and Chamber Choir. All performance majors are also required to participate in chamber music, a very important part of music at DePaul. Student performances are given in the Lincoln Park Campus Recital and Concert Halls, Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, and the Merle Reskin Theatre. In addition, many students perform with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the many regional and metropolitan orchestras, theater orchestras, jazz ensembles, and churches in the area.

The School of Music offers undergraduate degrees in Performance, Music Education, Jazz Studies, Composition, Performing Arts Administration, and Sound Recording Technology.
