LocationBarcelona Summer School Barcelona is not only the capital of the region of Cataluña but also the Spanish center of fashion, art, architecture, and gastronomy and the most diverse and cosmopolitan city in Spain. The summer school, located between Plaza Cataluña and Plaza España, is in a safe, affluent neighborhood just a short walk from such other famous areas of the city as the Gran Vía, Las Ramblas, and the university. The Barcelona Junior Program offers residence stays, with students divided by age and gender in dormitory halls, and the option of living with a host family. Granada Summer Camp With a profound history and the most visited attraction in Spain, La Alhambra, Granada is a modern city located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, just 45 minutes from the Costa Tropical. The Granada Junior Program offers residence stays, with students divided by age and gender in dormitory halls, and the option of living with a host family. Madrid Summer Camp Madrid, the capital of Spain, is located in the very center of the country. Its location allows visits to cities such as Barcelona, Seville, and Granada in less than 4 hours and other closer cities, such as Toledo, El Escorial, Salamanca, and Segovia, in less than 1 hour. The Summer Camp is located in one of the most prestigious private schools in the vicinity of one of Europe’s largest universities. It is only 15 minutes from the city center and well equipped for many different sports. Marbella Summer Camp (La Costa del Sol) Marbella (Málaga) is a beach resort located in the south of Spain, 20 minutes from Málaga and 1½ hours from Granada and Seville, the capital of Andalusia. An old town that still preserves most of its character, it has its own microclimate, white Mediterranean-style houses, and luxurious beaches. The three residential schools are located in areas of singular beauty and close to the beach. Nearby sites of special interest include the Nerja Caves, Granada, Gibraltar, and Seville. Salamanca Summer Camp Salamanca, which is known as the “Golden City,” is home to the second-oldest university in the world and some of the most fascinating architecture in Europe. Its Plaza Mayor, the most impressive in Spain, serves as the heart of the city and the region of Castile, where the purest of Spanish dialects is spoken. Located in the old walled city center, the school is in a five-floor, sixteenth-century Renaissance building recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Complex. The complex also has a classic cloister patio and an attached fifteenth-century church, one of the best examples of plateresque architecture in Salamanca. Sevilla Summer Camp Sevilla, the capital of Andalucía, has a population of roughly 700,000. The historical influence of the Moors, still present in old Sevillan architecture, is seen most clearly in magnificent buildings like the Alcazar palaces and the cathedral, which is among the most spectacular in all of Spain. The famous customs and traditions of bullfighting and flamenco help make Sevilla an exciting and spectacular city for the language traveler. Sevilla Junior Program participants attend classes in the heart of the historic Santa Cruz neighborhood, in modern facilities set in a building dating back to the early twentieth century. Facilities include twelve air-conditioned classrooms, a roof deck, a meeting room, and a multimedia classroom. Valencia Summer Camp Valencia, which is located on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, has a population of about 800,000. The region has become one of the most sought-after tourist destinations due to the large number of days of sunshine it receives each year and its temperate climate. The camp’s residential facilities are integrated into the campus of the University of Valencia. It offers a friendly atmosphere where international students are welcomed by their Spanish peers. Guanajuato Summer Camp, Mexico Guanajuato, located in central Mexico, is a picturesque, tranquil university city that serves as the capital of the Guanajuato state. The city is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Guanajuato is the ideal setting for a summer camp. It is a very safe place to live and is characterized by winding pedestrian streets, plazas bordered by pastel-colored houses with iron balconies, and abundant flowers. The majority of the campers live with host families, who warmly welcome students and cook the best local dishes for them. The camp has excellent facilities for youngsters to practice sports and take part in cultural activities such as cooking and dance classes. On the weekends, excursions may include colonial cities such as San Miguel de Allende and Guadalajara. Camp for Families An opportunity exists for families to come to camp together, with parents staying in an apartment or with host families, studying Spanish in the adult school while their children go to camp.
Background and PhilosophyThe International Summer Camps were founded in 1989 by ENFOREX, Spanish in the Spanish World, designed and elaborated by professional educators. Spanish (60 percent) and international (40 percent from all over the world) teenagers enjoy an educational holiday at seven of the top residential schools in Spain. The program’s main goals are to learn Spanish in an attractive environment and inculcate the basis of teamwork and individual responsibility in common tasks, study and play in direct contact with nature, build social relationships, and make new friends. In order to enhance the students’ ability to handle daily tasks without the support and protection of their families, ENFOREX offers a wide range of enriching activities. The Summer Camp is also designed for Spanish students, creating an international atmosphere that is suitable for the development of languages and exchange of cultures. The School is CEELE-certified by the University of Alcala and is also accredited by the Instituto Cervantes.
Program OfferingsThe program offers facilities for families and is designed for students between 5 and 18 years of age. Students are divided into four age groups: 5–10, 11–12, 13–14, and 15–18, and receive four lessons of Spanish language and culture per day. Class size averages 5 students, with a maximum of 12. Each lesson is 45 minutes. On the first day of school, a placement test is administered to determine the student’s level of Spanish. There are six different levels in Spanish, from complete beginner to proficiency. Classes are designed specifically for each level with the following language skills taught at all levels: speaking, listening, writing, grammar, Spanish culture, and Spanish history. All students receive a certificate diploma at the end of the course. Recreational sports, one the camp’s most fun activities, may be practiced individually or in groups and include swimming, horseback riding, archery, paddleball, tennis, water sports, jet skiing, camping, golf, basketball, aerobics, soccer, baseball, handball, and volleyball. A day camp option is also available, allowing students to attend camp from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. without living on the premises. Day camp students attend the academic program, Spanish classes, and cultural and sports program with the rest of the students from Monday to Friday.

Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesThe School offers a wide range of activities, including a nature workshop, handcrafts, theater, photography, computers and the Internet, radio, journalism, mural painting, and dance (jazz, flamenco and “Sevillanas”) workshops, which are available for students who wish to experience one or more of these cultural activities. Students also have the option of staying with host families. A wide range of fun social activities are organized in the afternoon or after dinner, indoors and outdoors, and include parties, concerts, entertaining games, competitions, picnics and camping, movies, camp dances, and talent shows. Students enjoy one full-day and two half-day trips every week to nearby sites of special interest around Granada (La Alhambra and other historic Moorish relics), Barcelona (Sagrada Familia, Modernistic Route, and Picasso Museo), Marbella (Granada, the Nerja Caves, the Banús Yacht Harbor, Gibraltar, and Seville), Madrid (El Prado, Toledo, El Escorial, Salamanca, Plaza Mayor, and Barcelona), Salamanca (Avila, Segovia, and Burgos and Castilla Cathedrals), and Valencia (Gandia, New Science, Art Museum, and Alicante).
FacilitiesThe School’s main building has a dining room, classrooms, dormitories, a computer room, and a library. The campuses have a swimming pool, golf, archery, soccer fields, and a sports complex with a gymnasium and paddleball, tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts. The Marbella School has its own farm and a horseback riding school with more than 14 horses.
StaffSpanish lessons are taught by native Spanish teachers holding five-year college degrees in Spanish linguistics and teaching Spanish as a foreign language, plus the CAP (teachers’ aptitude test). Some have master’s degrees and doctorates in Spanish. The School Director, the maximum authority in the program, supervises both a Coordinator for Social Activities and a team of group leaders. There is a group leader for approximately every 8 students. ENFOREX offers a free group-leader placement for minimum groups of 8 students. If a teacher or educational leader sends a group of 8 students and wishes to accompany them, he or she can stay for free for the duration of the group’s stay.
Medical CareMedical personnel are on 24-hour call at the School. The School has arrangements with Marbella’s General Hospital, which is 5 minutes away, for emergency treatment. All students are covered with medical insurance; however, it is recommended that students take out a private insurance that covers repatriation.
